Fifth Grade Instrument Tryout
Saturday, February 28th

Sign up for a time here!
We are excited to help your child find the instrument that best fits them. Please read the following instructions carefully to ensure a smooth and successful experience.
The Tryout Process:
- Park in the lot between the gyms and the Krum Public Library. You will enter the building through the activity gym door.
- Check in with Mr. Miller and you will receive a tryout sheet. This sheet will record which instruments your child tries and any recommendations from our instructors.
- Students will rotate through different stations to meet professional musicians and band directors who will guide them in trying out each instrument. Your child will be able to try out every instrument the Krum Middle School Band Program offers.
- Our instructors will assess factors such as physical compatibility, sound production, and ease of play to help determine which instrument suits your child best. After trying all instruments, our instructors will provide feedback and recommendations on which instrument may best fit.
- Check out with Mr. Miller before you leave. He will help guide you through choosing your top three choices.
Why should I try all the instruments?
- Many students come in with an idea of what they want to play but find they enjoy another instrument even more.
- Physical attributes such as mouth shape, hand size, and natural ability can make certain instruments a better choice.
- A successful band program requires a mix of instruments. By trying all options, students help ensure a well-balanced band where every section is strong.
- Choosing an instrument that fits well increases the likelihood of success and enjoyment in band.
What instrument will my child play?
Several factors are considered when determining which instrument your child will play:
- Student Choice: We always consider student preference, as enjoyment and enthusiasm are key to success
- Instrument Testing Scores: Students who score high on instrument testing are more likely to get their number one choice
- Elective Choice: Students who select band as their number one elective choice will receive priority placement. Some instrument classes are capped.
- Selmer Listening Test: The Selmer Listening Test, taken in music class, helps assess musical aptitude and can help guide instrument selection.
- Instrumentation Balance: To create a Successful band, the number of students in each instrument section must be balanced.
Money should never prevent your child from being in our program. If you have financial concerns, please speak with a band director about assistance options. Thank you for your participation in the instrument tryout process!
We look forward to helping your child start their musical journey.
